A popular sightseeing expedition from Alghero is a boat ride to Neptune's Grotto, an impressive deep marine cave in the sheer cliffs at Capo Caccia. The boat ride takes 45 minutes past the bay of Porto Conte. At the cave visitors can take a 45-minute tour entering through the long snaking passage that delves into the rock, to view dramatically lit, fantastic stalagmites and stalactites. The cave can also be reached by bus from the main terminal in Alghero, or by car, which on arrival necessitates climbing down 650 steps to the cave entrance.

Alghero is a little bit of Catalonia in Italy.

Alghero is a little bit of Catalonia in Italy. The most charming town in Sardegna has been strongly influenced by the Catalonians. Catalan is still the official language and the culinary tradition of this part of the island also shows a clear influence, but don't worry you will still be able to get a pizza here.
The main sights include the old city walls and the seven defensive towers that still stand tall. The Porta Terra is also part of the old defensive system. It was built at the expenses of the Jewish community of Alghero.

Via Roma, Via Carlo Alnerto and Via Principe Umberto are the main streets in the old town. You find many small shops, restaurants and bars in the area. At the end of the Principe Umberto you reach the Cathedral which has an impressive dome. A few blocks from here the Palazzo d'Albis (on Piazza Civica) and the Palau Reial (on Via Sant'Erasmo) are good examples of the predominant Catalan gothis style that makes Alghero such an elegant city. Alghero & North West Sardinia Tourist Information.
Perhaps you know Italy, but what do you know of Sardinia? This guide will allow you to plan your holiday and personal travel plan for visiting North West Sardinia and other places within approximately an hour from Alghero airport. But where's best to stay? If you prefer not to drive and require English to be spoken fairly universally then Alghero itself is your best option. However hire a car, grab a phrase book and you can then discover how much variety and space (even on the beach) this area of Sardinia offers. With the exception of Alghero and Castelsardo (both great places at Easter and New Year if you like parades or fireworks) some of the coastal resort areas in Sardinia literally close from the mid/end October until mid April. However even in the Sardinian "winter" if you are willing to travel inland then you can find beautiful countryside, space and perhaps your own personal Sardinia travel experience.
